The Minnehaha County Planning Department invites applications for the position of Planner I or II to join our team of professionals! We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is passionate about helping us develop a safe, healthy, and sustainable community. With an estimated 2021 population of just over 200,000 people, Minnehaha County offers unique challenges to address the needs of our urban and rural areas. Our department has a wide range of responsibilities including zoning enforcement, issuing building and zoning permits, new construction inspection, and maintaining a Geographic Information System (GIS) for the County.
Minnehaha County is located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the southeastern corner of the state. Sioux Falls is home to many beautiful parks and walking and biking paths, major medical facilities, and a variety of cultural centers. Sioux Falls is also within a convenient driving distance to larger metropolitan cities such as Omaha, NE and Minneapolis, MN.
Planner I hiring range is $23.03/hr - 24.80/hr. Planner II hiring range is $24.18/hr - 26.05/hr.
Examples of Duties Include
Resolve public concerns with zoning and public nuisance issues. Issue building permits. Review and process planning submittals. Research and prepare staff reports. Prepare maps and PowerPoint presentations for Planning Commission and/or County Commissioners. Draft and send violation notices to non-compliant property owners and coordinate with the State's Attorney's Office to bring violators into compliance. Track and report on US census issues and numbers. Answer public inquires relating to projects and activities including county plans, policies, and ordinances. A Planner II also assists in the review of proposed actions or decisions before the Planning Commission and the County Commission and makes written and oral presentations on such matters; collects and interprets the data relevant to the preparation and implementation of county planning documents; and prepares and updates the comprehensive plan.
Bachelor's degree in urban/regional planning or related field with some relevant internship or work experience. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered. General knowledge and understanding of all county ordinances, permitting procedures, and planning procedures. Ability to learn and enforce code and other planning related ordinances. Ability to work with people in potentially stressful and emotional situations. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other agencies, and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor. Consideration for appointment as a Planner II requires a bachelor's degree in urban/regional planning or related field of study with two years of related work experience or comparable combination of education and experience. Basic knowledge of planning principles and practices. Basic knowledge of governmental processes, activities, and operations. Ability to analyze problems and recommend practical solutions.
Master's degree in urban/regional planning. Ability to read legal descriptions and maps. Public speaking experience. Code enforcement and/or other planning related issues.
